What to do after a positive ADHD screening result

Pause before treating the result as an answer. The useful part is deciding what question you want a clinician, school or employer to consider next.

Illustrated screening report leading towards several practical next-step conversations

The short answer

Read the whole report, note the examples and limitations, then decide what outcome you need. You might discuss referral with a GP, approach a full assessment provider or use the report to structure a conversation about support. An above-threshold screen does not confirm ADHD or guarantee referral.

Read beyond the headline

Check which questionnaire crossed a threshold, who completed it and what the report says about impairment and context. Also read the limitations. A positive self-report with little information from another setting is still useful, but it is not the same evidence as a complete diagnostic assessment.

Decide what you want to happen next

Your next step depends on your goal:

  • For an NHS assessment, arrange a GP appointment and discuss whether referral is clinically appropriate.
  • For a private assessment, check the provider's qualifications, process, fees and approach to treatment or shared care before booking.
  • For a child, speak with school about observed needs and support. A diagnosis is not always required before reasonable classroom support begins.
  • For work, focus on the difficulty and adjustment needed. You do not have to wait for diagnosis to have a practical conversation.

Bring concrete examples

Choose a few examples that show the pattern, its frequency and its effect. Useful examples are specific: missed deadlines despite reminders, repeated loss of important items, unsafe impulsive decisions or a child needing much more support than peers to begin ordinary tasks.

Avoid trying to prove every symptom in one appointment. The report can hold the detail while you explain the main effect on your life.

Keep other explanations open

Sleep problems, anxiety, depression, trauma, substance use and other neurodevelopmental differences can overlap with ADHD or occur alongside it. A full assessment considers this wider picture.

If a wellbeing response raises an urgent concern, do not wait for the report or an ADHD appointment. Use the urgent help routes shown in the service.
